Sehwag leads India in final test

COLOMBO: Virender Sehwag led India's bold reply to Sri Lanka's first innings of 425 with an unbeaten 97 on the second day of the third and final test on Wednesday.

Sehwag cracked 17 fours, 11 of them off left-arm pacer Chanaka Welegadara, as India reached 180 for two. Sachin Tendulkar, making a record 169th test appearance, is unbeaten on 40.

Earlier, Thilan Samaraweera eased to a 12th test hundred and was unbeaten on 137 when Sri Lanka's final wicket fell.

Lasith Malinga gave Sri Lanka the breakthrough in the 11th over when Murali Vijay lofted an easy catch to mid-on with his score on 14.

Angelo Mathews then got rid of Rahul Dravid for 23 trapping him leg before, but in his next over he put down a hot return catch offered by Sehwag with his score on 52. Sehwag and Tendulkar have so far added 88 for the third wicket.

Samaraweera had reached his century in the final over before lunch, moving from 99 to 104 courtesy of an overthrow as he pushed the ball for a single to square leg but the return to the bowler's end ricocheted off the stumps and sped to the boundary.

Sri Lanka lost their last four wickets for 44 runs after lunch with Ishant Sharma ending the innings with the wickets of Ajantha Mendis and Chanaka Welagedara.

Sri Lanka lead the series 1-0.

PCB contacts BHC for Yusuf visa

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has contacted British High Commission (BHC) for issuance of visa for Test cricketer Mohammed Yusuf, Geo News reported Monday.

However, despite all this, Yusuf’s chances of inclusion in playing 11 before second Test match seem bleak.

PCB has resolved to immediately send Mohammed Yusuf to England after historic defeat of Pakistan cricket team but owing to incomplete traveling documents, Yusuf may not make his come back before second Test.

Sources said Yusuf possesses UK’s visit visa, which disallows him to play cricket there.

PCB is hopeful for issuance of Yusuf’s sports visa by Tuesday while he will fly England on first available flight.

England vs Pakistan: 1st Test Match

NOTTINGHAM: England captain Andrew Strauss won the toss and elected to bat against Pakistan in the first Test of a four-match series at Trent Bridge here on Thursday.

England dropped Tim Bresnan from their 12-man squad. Bresnan had been a late replacement for fellow Yorkshire seamer Ajmal Shahzad, who withdrew with an ankle injury on Wednesday.

This was England batsman Kevin Pietersen's first match for nearly a month because of a thigh injury.

Pietersen's right foot and ankle were both strapped up after he trod on a stray football during practice here on Wednesday but the South Africa born shotmaker was passed fit.

Pakistan were unchanged from the team that beat Australia by three wickets at Headingley last week to level a two-Test series at 1-1.

That match saw Pakistan lose the toss toss and bowl Australia out for just 88 in their first innings in similarly overcast conditions.

India 95-0 against Sri Lanka’s huge 642-4 in 2nd Test Match.

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene revelled on their favourite hunting ground to send India chasing leather in the second cricket Test on Tuesday.

Sangakkara hit 219, his seventh double-century, and Jayawardene made 174 as Sri Lanka declared at 642-4 on the second day at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC).

India, who trail 1-0 in the three-match series, replied confidently with 95 for no loss by stumps, but still face a long haul to reach 443 and avoid the embarrassment of following on for the second game in a row.

Virender Sehwag was unbeaten on a typically aggressive 64 off 63 balls, while Murali Vijay was on 22.

Sangakkara and former captain Jayawardene continued the run-spree after opener Tharanga Paranavitana's century on the first day on a lifeless wicket that afforded no help to the bowlers.

England Victory:

In the end England's eight-wicket victory came with ease on the final afternoon at Lord's as they comfortably chased down 160 following Steven Finn's first five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Andrew Strauss guided the pursuit with a confident 82 after the visitors' last five wickets fell for 35 under cloudy skies against Finn and Tim Bresnan, yet they have done much to enhance their standing over the last five days.

Afridi named captain for Asia Cup, tour of England

Lahore, May 25 : Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has been named the captain of the national team for the Asia Cup and the tour of England.

Announcing the decision, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ijaz Butt said that Afridi had the confidence of all players during the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies, and that was the reason behind him getting the captaincy.

Butt further said that the names of the 30 players for the England tour will be announced after the upcoming meeting.

The Asia Cup will be played in Sri Lanka from June 15 to 25, while the series against Australia and England will be played between July and August.
